Volunteers receive a free ‘Skafia’ volunteer t-shirt, fun contests and perks, free society membership, special promotions for events throughout the year and of course an exclusive post-festival appreciation party.

What can students expect volunteering with us:

Orientation – before the festival we come together for an orientation meeting to talk to our volunteers. At this meeting we go over volunteer positions, expectations for each position, what to expect during the festival as a volunteer, rules, and regulations, our code of conduct as well as meeting the team leads for each position. This meeting ensures that volunteers can get their questions answered before the festival and see who they’re working with. We will also be providing a zoom link to the meeting for those unable to attend in person.

Work experience hours – our volunteer coordinators will guide volunteer students in their tasks and teach them hands on what it is like working with an urban outdoor music festival. Any student requiring sign offs on work experience hours can get their coordinator to fill out forms at the end of their shifts. This real-world work experience is a great way to add ‘previous experience’ to a resume.

Letter of recommendation – by request, volunteer coordinators will be happy to provide volunteers who have completed their shifts with a written reference letter of recommendation to add to the student’s resume for future employment applications.

Hands on job skills – Volunteers will gain such skills as taking direction from supervisors, learning about performance expectations during a shift, how to communicate needs as a worker, how to work with others with a common goal, and what building community in the workplace looks like.

Community and networking – Volunteers often make lifelong connections and new friends volunteering with our festival. Our festival and society are an excellent way to get out of one’s shell and meet new people with a common goal of making this year’s festival the best one yet. Being in new social situations can be tough, but our society loves bringing people together for a fun and exciting experience while volunteering.

Great memories and FUN – We ADORE our volunteers, and we work hard to ensure that they enjoy their time working with us. We have coordinators and organizers working hard to look after the wellbeing of our volunteers. From making sure our volunteers have access to food and drinking water, to breaks, first aid, hi5’s and laughs to dance breaks and time to be silly. Our Ships Point outdoor festival site is for all ages and we want everyone to have an excellent time!

Volunteer appreciation party- every year after the festival, we throw an exclusive private party for our volunteers to thank them for all their hard work. This is an all-ages event (with bar for 19+ w/ ID) with food, games, prizes, music, and festival highlights.

TC 10 K Volunteer opportunity!

The TC 10 K  is looing for students to help marshal this year. If you enjoy being outside, need volunteer hours and love the great enery that this event is know for contact Tracy for more information.

We would like invite youth volunteers to Welcome Day Celebration 2024 on Sunday, March 3rd at Saanich Commonwealth Place from 11AM to 4PM. The annual event is co-hosted by not-for-profits REP Here In Canada (Here Magazine) and Le Relais, as well as the District of Saanich.

The all-ages event includes community information tables, a multicultural market, newcomer expo, workshops, youth activities, and cultural performances throughout the day. Students can volunteer in a variety of roles, including welcome and reception roles, event ambassadors, photographers, vendor support etc. It is a great opportunity to meet the wider community and engage in a multicultural space!

We will be hosting a volunteer engagement night with pizza and Zumba this Friday evening at Braefoot Park Centre and there will be a training and orientation session the evening before the event at Saanich Commonwealth Place.

Kaleidoscope Theatre for Young People is gearing up for our 50th Anniversary Season and that means looking for volunteers to support us in front of house roles during productions, as well as support our popular Family FUNday events. We thought this may be of interest to some of your students and we would appreciate you sharing this information with them.

Being a volunteer is great for all ages 14+ and an excellent opportunity for high school students who may need volunteer hours in order to graduate, or for those who are just looking to gain some working experience. Volunteering for a performance also allows the students to see our shows for free!

Letters of reference with total hours volunteered may be requested.

Volunteer for a Performance:

We are looking for ticket scanners and ushers for each performance this season. Ticket scanners will scan tickets at the door and direct folks with ticket questions to our box office staff. Ushers will help guests find their assigned seats in the theatre. They also sit in the theatre during the show to ensure patron safety and admit latecomers.

Front of house shifts range from 1 hour and 15 minutes (ticket scanners) to 2 hours (ushers). There are both daytime and evening shifts to choose from. Please note that the first two shows of our season will take place at the Roxy Theatre, 2657 Quadra St. The final show of our season will take place outdoors in Esquimalt Gorge Park (near the Gorge Park Pavilion)

Volunteer for a Family FUNday:

We are looking for volunteers to help us with craft stations, dress up stations, greeting guests at the door and helping us with set up/tear down. These shifts are from 8:45am-12:15pm, but even if you can only attend part of that time, we would still greatly appreciate your support.

We are looking to build our volunteer base, especially with high-school age students. It’s a great way for arts lovers to make connections with the professional theatre community, and an easy and fun way to build volunteering credits for graduation!

Environment:

• At the Cridge Village Seniors Centre in a resident’s suite or in the Grand Lounge at 1307 Hillside Ave, Victoria BC
• Using your senior partner’s choice of device (computer, tablet or smart phone)
• Paired one-on-one with a senior partner. Pairs are maintained for the duration of the program unless a partner is ill/away. In that case, substitute matches are made for that session.
• Session duration 1 hour
• Supervisor available on site

Description of duties:

• Attend Cyber Senior sessions
• Assist senior in using the technology devise of their choice, computer, tablet or smart phone and visit over one hour
• Build a relationship of trust, care and fun by being dependable, engaged and genuine.

• 24 Hours as laid out in the Student Schedule below (plus orientation and wrap up party)

Skill Requirements:

• Using your computer skills and technology knowledge to assist the senior with their device needs each session, such as help navigating their email, social media, web search or perhaps learning about the devise and/or troubleshooting any issues as they come up. Also playing games, looking at photos or video chats with their family/friends.
• Emotional intelligence skills working with someone often seven decades older than yourself such as: being able to adapt your help if there is a hearing or vision challenge, slow down your rate of speech if necessary, have good diction, explain technology in understandable way for seniors and check in that things have made sense to them.
• Being dependable and reliable, planning your school work, appointments, exams, etc. around this volunteer commitment. Coming to all sessions and giving notice if ill (by 11:00 that day at the latest).
• Showing care and commitment to the relationship by showing up and being engaged.

Big Brothers Big Sisters

We are looking for teen volunteers, aged 14-18, to be matched with elementary school students for our In-School Mentoring program. Mentors and mentees spend one hour together once per week at school, spending time together and sharing their interests. Our team provides training and support for mentors, as well as activity ideas and supplies for visits. A commitment of one school year is required.

Two Opportunities at Big Brothers Big Sisters

1. “B You: Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds” is a multi-week group mentoring program designed to encourage healthy relationships, balanced eating, and positive self-image among female-identifying and gender-diverse middle school students. Three to four female-identifying mentors (17-30 years old) are matched with a small group of youth and meet in-person during school hours from October to December. Each weekly session is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours long and some additional preparation time is required. Volunteer mentors receive training and support and gain experience with group facilitation, lesson-planning, and leadership. 1. “In-School Mentoring” is a program that runs throughout the school year on an on-going basis. Each Volunteer Teen Mentor (14 years old and up) is paired with a child (Kindergarten to Grade 5) at a nearby elementary school. Robert J. Porter Park & Fairfield Community Place

Fall Fairfield, presented by the Fairfield Gonzales Community Association (FGCA), is an annual music, arts, crafts and food festival set in the heart of Fairfield. The festival is a free, all-ages, community event celebrating local businesses and non-profits, artists, performers, and people across Victoria in recognition of Fairfield’s dynamic culture and the harvest season!

Not only will there be a list of amazing vendors with artisan arts, products, and foods, there will be live music by local artists! Look out for multiple activity tents to craft your heart out! The famous Harvest Hats will be back, as well as fun painting and other hands-on activities. Before crafting, don’t forget to visit the Greater Victoria Animal Crusaders to cuddle with some rescue animals or go rollerblading with Marty’s Roller Party!

We couldn’t make this event without the support of our amazing volunteers! Be a part of this lively community event, meet new friends, and enjoy all the fun the day has to offer! Roles include: set-up/take down, roller skating attendant, MC, craft station helper, bartender (SIR required) and more. We have various roles suitable for different needs/preferences, so we encourage everyone to join us!

Coastal Research Education and Advocacy Network (CREAN) is inviting you to volunteer!

We are happy to provide a fantastic opportunity for youth between the ages of 15 and 30 to show up as a community and corporate ambassadors while interning in various capacities in BC.

CREAN will pair you with an organization depending on your fields of interest, such as education, health, social services, climate change, housing, and gender studies.

This is a great opportunity to acquire your 120 hours of volunteer credits to graduate or provide you with hands-on employment experience that looks great on not just your resume but also on your college/university application.
